The apps removed from the play store were found to display intrusive ads. 21 malicious apps were downloaded for a total of 8 million times from the play store. The download count is huge and hence the threat that they pose is alarming.

The malicious apps portrayed themselves as ordinary gaming apps. These apps had HiddenAds malware which would later harm user device. HiddenAds is a trojan that is used by hackers to serve ads outside the app platform.

Hackers were using social media platforms to lure users into downloading these malicious apps. Once installed, the apps not only hide their icons to prevent deletion but also hide behind relevant-looking advertisements, making them hard to identify.

Apps also show timed ads outside their platform which cannot be skipped and in some cases they launch browser ads. These trojan and adware can be used by hackers to absolutely bombard their targets with malicious and random ads.

Google is actively trying to stop these malicious apps from infiltrating its Play Store. NPAV recommends users to instantly uninstall such apps as they can be used by hackers to host various cyber attacks.
