Truecaller is a widely used application which provides unknown caller identification, spam detection, etc. to the users. The app has over 500 million downloads which means that it has a huge base of active customers and their data.
A recent research found out that the data of over 4 crore Indian users is available on dark web for sale at a very cheap price of $1000 only. Research shows that the users who had their data compromised were from various states and regions throughout India.
The states include Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, North East India, Odisha and Punjab, along with another folder titled ‘Unknown’. The details include phone numbers, names, genders, locations, emails ids and Facebook profile information.
Indian central and State cybercrime agencies have started their investigation and are trying to handle the situation. Truecaller has however denied that any such data breach has taken place in its organization. The organization claim of having all its data and servers safe and secure.
The threat actor behind the data leak has been identified as someone who goes by the name TooGod on the dark web. Keeping a low price for such precious data simply means that the hacker wants to expand its name and gain popularity rather than aiming for revenue.
