Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos are some of the many accounts compromised in the attack.
The attack on the accounts of these major cryptocurrency players were made within minutes to one another. The tweets shared by the compromised accounts are all very similar and the hackers might have used bots for these.
The tweets sent out by the compromised account read – “I have decide to give back to my community”. The hackers added “The bitcoins sent to my account will be sent back doubled” to lure their targets and trick them into the trap.
Research has shown that the wallet enlisted to receive bitcoin was same for all the tweets and has received 300 transactions ever since. Hacking the official account of such big names and using it to spread such message will be highly effective and beneficial for the hackers.
This is not the first time when celebrity accounts on Twitter are being hacked. There has been various instances over the past years involving similar hacking activities. Researchers have commented that it is a classic Bitcoin scam and it is unclear who was behind such massive attack.
