Over 100 high-profile attendees were targeted by Iranian state-sponsored hackers.
These individuals were high-profile attendees of this year’s Munich Security Conference and the Think 20 (T20) summit. The attacks were successful in compromising several victims, including former ambassadors and other senior policy experts.
Researchers have claimed that hackers have targeted the emails of these individuals and they wanted to steal intelligence from it. Hackers have also sent out various spoofing emails to their targeted individuals.
The attackers were using almost perfect English in the spoofed emails and were masquerading as organizers of the Munich Security or the Think 20 (T20) conferences. Microsoft has also reported a new attack where nation state-sponsored hacking groups operating from Russia, China, and Iran were involved.
These hackers were seen targeting organizations and individuals involved in this year’s U.S. presidential election. The targeted professionals have been asked to review their email-forwarding mechanism to check for any malicious activities or modules.
The targeted individuals contain various cyber security policies and are prominent decision makers in the security field. Hacking their accounts and stealing from them is both alarming and extremely dangerous.
