A Chinese smartphone manufacturer has reportedly earned $4.2 million by selling malware-infected models.
Chinese phones are generally considered unreliable when it comes to data privacy. Gionee’s subsidiary was found guilty for intentionally installing trojan on various smartphones. The count of the infected devices was found to be around 21.75 million.
According to the court documents, Gionee’s subsidiary Shenzhen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd implanted the malware via a software update, which is automatically updated on the infected smartphones through the Pull method.
“Dark Horse” is the program used by hackers to install and activate the malware. Hackers have reportedly gained a sum of $4.2 million by spreading this infection.
Gionee has been held under suspicion for using malware against unsuspecting users. Gionee was once considered one of the leading Chinese smartphone brands and these reports have lead Gionee to its downfall.
