Facebook ads are again being exploited by hackers to phish the login credentials of users.
The new phishing campaign was using Facebook ads to redirect users to GitHub pages where the actual phishing pages resided. The users targeted span from a number of countries including Egypt, the Philippines, Pakistan, and Nepal with more than 615,000 of them being affected in totality.
The Facebook ads used by hackers are often impersonating legitimate companies. An ad in Nepal impersonated Nepal telecom and promised 3 GB of free data. If the user clicks on the ad, a fake hacker-controlled Facebook login page is opened.
Researchers have reported various similar ads that were being localized and spread around the targeted countries. Security experts have claimed that the phishing scams are widespread as there have been reports of 500 Github repositories hosting the phishing pages.
