Facebook profiles of 267 million users sold on dark web

Hackers are selling Facebook profiles of 267 million users on dark web and hacker forums.

Hackers are charging $623 for selling user profiles of users on the forums. Reports claim that none of these records include passwords, but they have the information that could further be used to launch various other attacks on the victim.

Researchers have revealed that these records contain a user’s full name, their phone number, and a unique Facebook ID. The ISP hosting the database quickly went offline and a secondary server was put up instead of it. However, the secondary server was attacked by an unknown threat actor which left a message stating to secure the servers.

The secondary server had new data of 16.8 million users which included more information such as a Facebook user’s email address, birth date, and gender. On carrying out further research, it was found that this data was sold in hacker forums by the actors for $623.

The compromised data contains sensitive and personal information of users which can be used to launch various cyber attacks at them. The data had usernames, emails, and phone numbers of users which can be used to launch phishing attacks by sending emails and SMS pretending to be from Facebook. They can send emails with malicious attachments and malware backdoor.

NPAV recommends users to monitor their privacy settings on Facebook and if your data is among the leaked ones, beware of malicious looking mails and SMS. Never download attachments or provide information on non-trusted links that came to you via your email or SMS.
