Microsoft has released the patch for the SMBv3 protocol’s vulnerability.
The patch is available as KB4551762, which is an update for Windows 10, versions 1903-09, and Windows server 2019, versions 1903-09. The update released by Microsoft fixes CVE-2020-0796 (SMBGhost), which is a vulnerability in Server Message Block. SMB is the protocol used for sharing files, printers, and various other resources on LAN and on the internet.
The vulnerability opens a window for attackers to gain access and connect to remote systems. After exploiting the vulnerability attacker can run malicious code with system privileges, allowing remote takeovers of vulnerable systems. Researchers have claimed that this vulnerability can be used to create and spread SMB worms, similar to WannaCry and NotPetya.
Microsoft has said that the vulnerability is a threat to Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 systems. There are various researchers who have created and exploited the vulnerability just to prove its risk and threat.
