Surge in Cryptocurrency Scams Raises Alarm in Himachal Pradesh

The State CID Cybercrime unit of Himachal Pradesh has issued a warning about the rising number of residents falling victim to cryptocurrency scams. DIG Mohit Chawla reported 135 crypto fraud cases in 2024, with 24 already registered in 2025, indicating a troubling trend.

These scams often stem from unauthorized exchanges or fake digital currencies, enticing victims with promises of high returns. The anonymity and complexity of crypto transactions make them attractive to cybercriminals, many of whom operate on the dark web.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, individuals continue to engage with unverified investment platforms and schemes advertised on social media that claim to “double your money.”

DIG Chawla emphasized that while cryptocurrency is legal in India, interactions with it often violate regulatory guidelines. He urged citizens to use only licensed platforms that adhere to KYC (Know Your Customer) norms, warning against platforms that promise instant returns or lack identity verification.
In response to the growing threat, Himachal Pradesh Police have implemented AI-based tools to monitor blockchain transactions and are collaborating with national and international agencies to combat crypto scams. Authorities encourage victims or suspicious observers to report incidents by calling the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or contacting their local cybercrime police station.
