Chess.com Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of 4,541 Users

Online chess platform Chess.com revealed a data breach that compromised personal information of 4,541 individuals, including one resident of Maine. The breach occurred on June 5, 2025, but was discovered two weeks later on June 19. Hackers gained unauthorized access to an external system, obtaining names and personal identifiers.

Chess.com began notifying affected users on September 3, 2025, offering 12 months of free identity theft protection. The company is enhancing security measures to prevent future incidents.
Though the number of affected users is relatively small compared to Chess.com’s 150 million users, the breach highlights ongoing cyber risks for major platforms. Users are advised to stay alert for phishing attempts and monitor their accounts closely.

Chess.com has not confirmed law enforcement involvement and continues investigating the incident. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
