WhatsApp Chat Histories Found Stored Unencrypted on macOS and iOS Devices
Security researchers have revealed that WhatsApp chat histories may be stored unencrypted on macOS and iOS devices after messages are decrypted locally. While WhatsApp protects messages in transit using end-to-end encryption (E2EE), the locally stored SQLite database containing chats may remain accessible in plaintext format.

Researchers found that WhatsApp stores message data inside a shared app container, which could theoretically allow other Meta-owned apps with the same developer permissions to access the data. Although this behavior aligns with Apple’s sandboxing architecture, it raises concerns about local data protection, cross-app access, and potential forensic extraction from compromised devices.
The findings highlight the growing importance of endpoint security and encryption-at-rest protections. Users are advised to secure devices with strong passcodes, limit unnecessary app installations, and keep systems updated.
