Fake APK Fraud in India: Delhi Man Loses Rs 6.57 Lakh

A recent case investigated by Delhi Police shows how dangerous APK fraud can be. A Delhi man reportedly lost ₹6.57 lakh after clicking an SMS link and installing a malicious APK file. Police traced part of the stolen money and arrested three people allegedly involved in moving the fraud funds through cards and banking channels.

Fake APK scams often use messages pretending to be from banks, courier companies, electricity providers or government services. The message creates urgency and asks users to install an app or click a link. Once installed, a malicious APK may request access to SMS, notifications or device controls, potentially allowing attackers to steal sensitive information and intercept OTPs.

To stay safe, never install APK files received through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram or email. Download apps only from official stores, keep unknown-app installation disabled, review app permissions regularly, and never share OTPs, UPI PINs or passwords. If money is stolen, immediately call 1930, India’s Cyber Crime Helpline, and report the incident at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
