Fake Pension Certificate App Scam Targets Android Users in Delhi

A call or message claiming that a pension may stop unless a “life certificate” is submitted can sound convincing, especially to retirees. In a reported case from West Delhi, a retiree allegedly lost ₹17 lakh after being asked to install an Android app for the process.

Delhi Police’s Cyber Cell arrested an 18-year-old student in connection with the case, according to reports published on October 27, 2026. Police allege that malicious APK files he created were used to obtain confidential information and take money from the victim’s bank account. The arrest and investigation have been reported; the allegations have not been established in court.

An APK is an Android app installation file. Scammers may send one through a message or direct a person to download it from a website, disguising it as a pension, banking or other service app. A convincing name or logo does not prove an app is genuine, and installing software from an unknown source can put personal and financial information at risk.

Do not install apps sent through calls, SMS or chat. Access pension services through official channels, and ask a trusted family member before installing an unfamiliar app. If you have installed one and suspect fraud, contact your bank immediately and report it at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.
