Happy Birthday Linux: Celebrating 34 Years of Open-Source Innovation

On August 25, 2025, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of Linux, a cornerstone of modern computing. What started as a hobby project by Linus Torvalds in 1991 has evolved into a powerful operating system that supports everything from smartphones to supercomputers.

Linux has grown from its initial version with 10,239 lines of code to a robust kernel with over 34 million lines, contributed by more than 25,000 developers. It powers all of the world’s top 500 supercomputers and handles over 90% of public cloud workloads. Additionally, Linux, through Android, dominates the smartphone market with a 72% share.

In the IoT space, Linux powers over 68% of connected devices, and its desktop market share has recently increased to 4.1%. The Linux market is projected to grow from $10.94 billion in 2024 to $41.27 billion by 2034, driven by cloud adoption and digital transformation.
As Linux enters its 35th year, it continues to influence emerging technologies, demonstrating the power of open-source collaboration and innovation.
