New Policy for Secure Sharing of Transport Data in India: Key Highlights

The National Transport Repository (NTR) is central to India’s transport data infrastructure, integrating information from platforms like Vahan, Sarathi, eChallan, eDAR, and FASTag. With over 390 million vehicles and 220 million driver licenses, the NTR is accessed by various government and private entities.

To create a legal framework for data requests, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has introduced a “Policy for Data Sharing from the National Transport Repository.” This policy ensures secure and uniform data sharing, limiting access to government functions, law enforcement, academic research, and business facilitation.

Organizations must follow a formal request process to access data, which is strictly regulated due to its sensitive nature. The policy balances data access with privacy concerns and has been circulated to all relevant ministries and stakeholders, reflecting the government’s commitment to responsible digital infrastructure management.
