Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty Targeted in Cyber Fraud: Fake Telecom Call Threatens Digital Misuse, FIR Filed

Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty received a cyber fraud call on September 5 at 9:40 am from someone posing as a Telecom Ministry official, claiming her 2020-registered mobile number was spreading obscene videos and would be disconnected by noon unless she shared personal details and linked her Aadhaar. Truecaller falsely listed the number as official, and the scammer threatened to misuse her number for pornographic content—echoing "digital arrest" scams.

Murty avoided the trap, and a complaint was filed on September 20 by B. Ganapathy, 65, at Bengaluru's Cyber Crime Police Station. An FIR was registered against an unknown accused under IT Act sections 66C (identity theft), 66D (cheating via computer resources), and 84C (attempt to commit offenses).

Police have set a trap, obtained the fraudster's number, and are tracing it with telecom providers. A senior officer highlighted the intimidation of a prominent MP through spoofed identities, underscoring sophisticated cyber threats targeting high-profile figures for sensitive information.
