Cyber Scams from Southeast Asia Cost India ₹1,500 Crore Monthly

Indian authorities report a staggering loss of approximately ₹1,500 crore each month in 2025 due to cyber fraud predominantly originating from Southeast Asia. In the first half of 2025, online financial losses attributed to these scams have reached an estimated ₹8,500 crore, with over half linked to sophisticated cybercrime operations in Southeast Asian countries.

These scams exploit vulnerabilities in digital literacy and trust, targeting individuals through various deceptive means. The significant monthly financial drain highlights a persistent threat that erodes public confidence in digital transactions and poses a serious challenge to the nation’s financial security.

Origins of the Threat
The networks behind these cyber frauds are believed to operate from secure locations in Southeast Asia, utilizing advanced technology and a transnational approach to deceive victims. Scams range from fake investment schemes to digital arrest ploys, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace and recover stolen funds due to complex legal jurisdictions.
