Windows 11 Update May Trigger BitLocker Recovery Key Prompt, Microsoft Warns
Microsoft has confirmed an issue in April 2026 Windows 11 updates that may force users to enter their BitLocker recovery key after installation. Updates KB5083769 and KB5082052 can trigger unexpected recovery prompts on devices with non-standard BitLocker Group Policy configurations, potentially locking users out.

The issue impacts Windows 11 versions 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2, mainly affecting enterprise environments where BitLocker settings deviate from recommended configurations. This can cause operational disruptions, especially if multiple systems require recovery keys simultaneously.

IT administrators are advised to review BitLocker policies, ensure recovery key access via Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, and test updates before deployment. Despite the issue, Microsoft continues to recommend these updates while working on a resolution.
