UK Education Department Hit by Cyber Attack Affecting 607,000 Records

A cyber attack on England’s Department for Education (DfE) has reportedly exposed around 607,000 records, raising concerns over data security in the education sector. The affected information includes telephone numbers and email addresses linked to individuals and organisations.

The DfE confirmed that banking information and other sensitive data were not accessed. The incident affected the Turing Scheme portal and the department’s online help desk, with officials taking swift action to contain the attack. The DfE is working with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and National Crime Agency (NCA) to investigate the incident and has referred the matter to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

The department clarified that the 607,000 figure represents records rather than individual people. While the immediate risk to affected individuals is considered limited, exposed contact information could potentially be used in targeted phishing and social-engineering attempts. The incident also highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges faced by educational institutions, with government data showing that many schools and further-education organisations have experienced cyber incidents.
