Florida Mom Loses ₹12.5 Lakh in AI Voice Cloning Scam

A woman from Hillsborough County, Florida, lost over ₹12.5 lakh (\$15,000) in a sophisticated deepfake scam where criminals cloned her daughter’s voice to stage a fake emergency. This incident highlights the growing threat of AI-powered voice fraud, with similar cases reported across the U.S.

Desperate Call, Real Money Lost On July 12, Sharon received a frantic call from someone claiming to be her daughter, April. The voice, crying and terrified, said she had been arrested after causing an accident that injured a pregnant woman. A man posing as a lawyer then demanded ₹12.5 lakh for bail, warning Sharon not to inform anyone, as it could harm her daughter's credit.

Believing the call was genuine, Sharon withdrew the money and handed it to a man who arrived at her home in a black Chevy Tahoe. Later, she received another call claiming the unborn child of the injured woman had died, demanding an additional ₹25 lakh (\$30,000) to avoid a lawsuit. It wasn't until Sharon's nephew contacted the real April, who had been at work, that they realized it was all a scam.
