Instagram Down: Global Outage Disrupts Posting and Direct Messages
Instagram experienced a major outage on March 11, 2026, disrupting services for thousands of users worldwide. The issue primarily affected users in the United States but also impacted people in countries such as India and the United Kingdom. Many users reported being unable to access their accounts, refresh their feeds, or send direct messages, highlighting the vulnerability of large centralized social media platforms during backend failures.

According to Downdetector, the disruption began around 7:40 AM IST, with over 10,000 outage reports recorded at its peak from major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York. Telemetry data shows that about 71% of users were unable to access the mobile app, while others faced server timeouts or feed loading issues. One of the most common complaints was the complete failure of Instagram’s Direct Messaging (DM) system.
