Retired UP Cop Falls Victim to Gujarat Cyber Fraudsters in ₹35 Lakh Scam

In a chilling example of cybercrime, two men from Gujarat impersonated CBI and Anti-Corruption Bureau officers to extort ₹35 lakh from retired police inspector Nagendra Mishra in Uttar Pradesh. This incident highlights a growing syndicate that exploits fear and official intimidation to defraud unsuspecting citizens.
The scam unfolded when Mishra received a WhatsApp video call from the fraudsters, who accused him of receiving “illicit funds” in his pension account.

Over several weeks, he transferred money for “verification,” believing he was under official scrutiny. The criminals used forged documents and legal notices to create a sense of urgency and fear.
The accused, Sarvaiya Kaushik and Bhagirath Singh Jala, were arrested by Azamgarh Cyber Police after a thorough investigation. Authorities recovered mobile phones, fake IDs, and other tools used in the scam.

The duo reportedly operated under the direction of cyber syndicate leaders who provided them with victims' personal information and scripts for their deception.
This incident underscores the rise of digital impersonation scams that prey on citizens' fears of government agencies. Cyber police warn that such scams are becoming increasingly common, with criminals using video calls to display fake credentials in real time. Many victims, often embarrassed, hesitate to report their losses.
Now, Mishra is advocating for awareness in his community, urging others, especially retirees, to verify any official communications before taking action.
