Hackers attacked 27 servers linked to Pimpri Chinchwad smart city project

All files and application systems of 27 servers linked with the PCMC smart city project were encrypted in a ransomware attack.

The data centre for the Pimpri Chinchwad smart city project is located in Nigdi where work on various smart facilities is going on. The smart city project is in its installation phase at the moment and there are nearly 300 servers working for it.

Three software companies are appointed to maintain these servers and handle their functionalities. 27 of these servers were targeted by the hackers and have posed a loss of 5 crores. The loss amount claimed was however based on the manpower used for these servers.

In a ransomware attack, the data present in the server is encrypted and cannot be accessed without proper decryption. Officials have claimed that the restoration of these servers and their integration with the command and control centre will take at least a month.

These cyber-attacks slow down the process of development which eventually causes huge economical damage to the government. NPAV recommends user and organization to keep their cybersecurity measures updated to deny similar attacks.
