Hyderabad Doctor Duped of ₹48 Lakh in Parcel Fraud
In the bustling city of Hyderabad, a 34-year-old doctor found herself ensnared in a web of deceit, losing a staggering ₹48 lakh to fraudsters operating under the guise of a parcel scam. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to prey on unsuspecting individuals.
The ordeal began innocuously enough with a phone call purportedly from FedEx courier, informing her of a parcel from Malaysia destined for Delhi, allegedly containing illicit substances. What followed was a harrowing sequence of events orchestrated by the fraudsters, who cunningly manipulated her fears and vulnerabilities.
In a distressing turn of events, she was coerced into a video call with a fictitious 'CBI constable' who, in a chilling display of authenticity, even dispatched an arrest warrant to her via WhatsApp. The psychological pressure mounted as she was compelled to divulge personal information about her family, spouse, and banking credentials.
As the fabricated narrative unfolded, the fraudsters demanded payment for what they deceitfully termed as 'fund legislation'. Faced with intimidation and threats, she reluctantly acquiesced, despite having only ₹3,000 in her account. The manipulation reached its zenith when they coerced her into liquidating her Fixed Deposits, each worth a staggering ₹25 lakh, under the false pretence of refunding the amount post-verification.
Tragically, the culmination of this elaborate deception left the victim financially devastated, with a loss totalling ₹48 lahks. The repercussions of such scams extend far beyond mere monetary loss, encompassing emotional trauma, shattered trust, and a profound sense of violation.
This distressing incident underscores the critical importance of vigilance and awareness in safeguarding against cyber threats. As guardians of our digital well-being, it is incumbent upon us to remain informed, sceptical, and proactive in identifying and thwarting attempts at fraud and deception.
In response to this alarming trend, officials from the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have issued a clarion call to the public, urging them to report any such incidents promptly. Assistance is readily available through the Cyber Crime Helpline number- 1930 or by visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
Let us unite in solidarity against cybercrime, arming ourselves with knowledge and resilience as we navigate the complex landscape of the digital age. Together, we can stem the tide of deception and safeguard our collective security and well-being.
