Cognizant is the latest target of Maze ransomware
Cognizant is one of the most established information technology company with its branches all over the world.
Cognizant was attacked by Maze ransomware actors on Friday as reported by sources. Cognizant has around 300,000 employees around the world and has a revenue of over $15 billion. A company this big and established being attacked by ransomware is a very alarming and threatening case.
Cognizant uses end-point clients, or agents that are installed on customer's systems to share patches and updates. Cognizant has sent emails to various clients stating that they were attacked by ransomware this Friday. It has also shared the names of files and servers of the threat actors which include kepstl32.dll, memes.tmp, and maze.dll.
The shared names and details of the files suggest that the cyber attack was a work of Maze ransomware actors. Cognizant has confirmed on its end that it was the work of Maze ransomware, which means that it was in their system for weeks trying to steal files, information, and credentials.
Maze ransomware steals files and then encrypts them as a leverage to ask for ransom. It threatens the victim to leak the compromised data if the victim fails to pay the ransom. If a tech giant like cognizant can fall victim to such ransomware actors and attacks, it is clear that these actors can paint a target on any individual or organization. NPAV recommends using proper cyber security measures to prevent such attacks.
